Step Into History at the Heart of Celina

Standing proudly since 1873, the Historic Clay County Courthouse has long been the heart and soul of Celina’s public square. For generations, it was where justice was served upstairs, and everyday life was managed downstairs—making it the hub of county activity and community connection.

But this courthouse is more than brick and mortar; it’s where stories were written. Couples said “I do” within its walls, dignitaries paused in their travels to take it in, and locals gathered under its shade—whittling, chatting, and celebrating life’s big moments together. Today, the courthouse remains a cherished symbol of Clay County’s heritage, inviting visitors to step back in time and experience the spirit of a town built on tradition.

The Legacy of Dale Hollow Dam: Power, Protection, and Progress

Dale Hollow Dam isn’t just a marvel of engineering—it’s a cornerstone of Clay County’s history. Authorized in the late 1930s and brought to life during the 1940s and ‘50s, the dam was built to tame the Cumberland River’s floods and later expanded to generate hydroelectric power. Today, the electricity produced here can supply a city of 45,000 people, all from the steady flow of these scenic waters.

Before the dam’s construction—and that of Lake Cumberland Dam upstream—this region faced frequent and destructive flooding. Dale Hollow Dam brought both safety and opportunity, transforming the surrounding area into a thriving destination for recreation, tourism, and lakeside living. Its creation shaped not only the landscape but the way of life in Clay County for generations to come.

Divided Loyalties: Clay County During the Civil War

Clay County’s roots run deep into Civil War history, with its communities once split in loyalty between North and South. In what was then part of Jackson and Overton Counties, residents along the Cumberland River and eastern hills largely sided with the Confederacy, while those in the west leaned toward the Union. Brave men from both sides of the divide enlisted and fought for their cause.

One of the area’s most notable figures was Oliver P. Hamilton, who organized a Confederate cavalry battalion in December 1862. Promoted to lieutenant colonel, Hamilton and his men—known as partisan rangers—made Celina their base of operations. They patrolled the Tennessee-Kentucky border, enforced conscription laws, and protected vital army supplies. Today, traces of this complex past still echo through the hills and hollows of Clay County, offering visitors a window into the region’s pivotal role in Civil War history.
